Unity and Education.
Unity has a long established reputation for
its provision of excellent educational service
to both its workplace
representatives and its members in general.
In conjunction with the TUC, the GFTU, and our local colleges (TUC) - we are
able to provide a wide and varied educational programme.
Unity also provides an in-house education service - Seminars and courses are
held in the schoolroom at our head office.
We are currently (in conjunction with the GFTU Educational Trust) holding a
series of seminars under the heading 'Pensions Awareness'. These are held
on Saturdays
and are open to all members and their partners.
New works representatives are about to start a course at Unity head office,
designed specifically to help new reps as they begin to get to grips with issues
such
as:
- Employment Law
- Health and Safety
- Pensions
- State Benefits
Promoting Further
Education for all.
Unity is committed to delivering further
education to all our members and works representatives via a network of
providers which include:
The TUC Education Service - Courses available for works representatives, on a
day release basis including:
- Union Reps : Stages 1, 2, & 3
- Health and Safety : Stages 1 & 2
- Computer courses
- Employment Law
- Union Learning Reps : Stages 1 & 2
Our members can also take advantage of computer courses that are held in the
evenings, and provided by local TUC centres. 38 members have started the
latest
course that commenced in October.
The General Federation of Trade Unions Educational Trust is a further source of
education that is available to Unity members. The Trust was set up in 1971
and it finances additional educational activities for trade unionists.
These courses cover a huge number of topics of interest and are very well
attended by Unity members.
These are residential courses that are held at
weekends at various venues throughout the country.
Unity is committed to working with local colleges and other providers of
education to enable our members to enhance their education in literacy, in
numeracy, and in other skills. Agreement is reached with employers to
provide time off and other facilities. These courses are again, extremely
well attended.
Unity also has a dedicated network of Union Learning Representatives that
provide advice and guidance on the availability of education and training to
their members on
site.
If you require any further information, help or advice on any educational
service,
please contact your local union learning rep/works rep on site, or our
Education Officer John Lally at our head office.
