to a special recall conference in November backed the union's change of name to Unity. The new name reflects the union's role as aunion for all workers, not only those in the ceramics industry. Said general secretary Geoff Bagnall: Following an overwhelming vote for the change from members, delegates at the recall conference agreed that Unity was the most appropriate name for the union as it enters a new era and looks outside the traditional ceramics industry for members Our membership recognises that we need to change as a union and support the changes we proposed and the way we are going forward. Figures show the union had 57,000 members in 1971, but membership fell to 15,000 in 2002 and is currently about 9,000. Mr Bagnall said the union already represents several hundred members in non - ceramic companies and the number is growing steadily. They include boat builders, care staff, plastic workers and even a cow inseminator. I believe that the name change was essential if we are to make the union more attractive to potential members outside of the traditional ceramics industry. He stressed that the union will not be turning its back on its thousands of members in the pottery industry. This union will never forget its roots and its long and proud history. It was founded by pottery workers, many of whom paid a terrible price for their union membership, and has been built up by generations of pottery workers over the years. However, if we are to rebuild the union following the devastating mass redundancies of recent years, we must look at industries outside of ceramics to recruit new members and becomea true community union. Now that the change has been made, we can go forward and continue to fight for the rights of workers in the pottery industry and in other occupations. About the Union :The History of our Union : The history of Unity (formerly known as CATU) can be traced back to the early 19th century. The early days of the union were ones of immense suffering and struggle for the pottery workers. The industry was one of the unhealthiest in the country. Workers were exploited by the good from oven deductions and the union was at the forefront of the Chartist movement of the 19th century. The ceramic industry has had many ups and downs - and the union has had many successes in maintaining its membership at high levels within the industry. The employees have always regarded the union as its main help in the struggle to maintain working peoples pay and conditions. From those beginnings our union has always been one of the most progressive unions in the country, fighting for improvements in the working conditions of its members. From it's early days it has been involved on the national stage with members all over the country - representing members from Scotland to Northern Ireland, down to Worcester and the South of England.",9);arrFiles[1]=new Array(2,"advice_information.html","2006-11-03","Advice & Information","_your,keywords,goes,here_","_your description goes here_","Menu: Welcome Page Benefits Education Employment Law Equality Health & Safety Pensions Contact Us : Unity Hillcrest House Garth Street Hanley Stoke on Trent Staffordshire ST1 2AB Telephone : 01782 272755 - Email Us - Location Map - Search Unity Advice & Information. These can range from equal pay, being bullied or maybe having an inadequate sick pay scheme in your workplace. So what do you do? You probably talk to your work colleagues about it, maybe even a manager, what then? What if the problem is not resolved? Where do you go for advice? Being a member of Unity gives you somewhere else to go. Somewhere where you are going to be given expert advice and assistance on how to resolve the problem. With a union in your workplace you will have an elected representative who will be trained in all aspects of how to deal with your everyday problems and have the backing of experienced Union Officials. Being in a trade union means that you and your colleagues can have a collective voice so that you can negotiate and defend changes to your terms and conditions of employment. It is easy to guess what you will be told about unions - You will be forced to go on strike, the union will shut the company down, that the company can resolve its own problems and don't need the union in the workplace. The truth is simple. Unions represent employees not companies. Your employers are more likely to listen to you if you are supported by a union. Over 90% of the top companies in the UK recognise trade unions. All employees then have an opportunity to have a collective voice at work. Don't let the management talk you out of it. <Continue to Benefits of Joining Unity: How we can help ...>",6);arrFiles[3]=new Array(4,"benefits2.html","2006-11-03","Benefits of Joining Unity","_your,keywords,goes,here_","_your description goes here_","Menu: Welcome About the Union Join Unity Benefits of Joining Meet the Officers Advice & Information Unity Newsletter Latest news: Age Discrimination Click Here Maternity Issues Click Here Health & Safety Exec Click Here Contact Us : Unity Hillcrest House Garth Street Hanley Stoke on Trent Staffordshire ST1 2AB Telephone : 01782 272755 - Email Us - Location Map - Search Unity Benefits of Joining Unity: How we can help. Profiles of all our Officers are found below : Geoff Bagnall - General Secretary My name is Geoff Bagnall. I started to work in the ceramics industry in 1974 at Crown Staffordshire China which was part of the Wedgwood group. Upon commencing work I immediately became active within Unity, attending my branch meetings and completing the various courses that were on offer at the time. I became the official union representative for about 3 years. I left Crown Staffordshire China and started work at Royal Doulton. Although I was no longer the Trade Union Representative I remained an active member of the Union. After a relatively short period of time I once again became the Union Representative. I was elected to full time officer in 1981 and elected to the position of General Secretary in 1996. (send me an email) Garry Oakes - Assistant General Secretary My name is Garry Oakes. I was elected in 1985 to the position of Organiser. In 1995 I was elected to the position of Assistant General Secretary which I still hold. I have over the past 20 years dealt with many individual problems as well as collective grievances. I have sat as a member of the Ceramic Joint Council for 18 years and have been the Joint Secretary for the past 14 years. Part of my current duties are the links between the Union and the Labour Party both locally and national, overseeing the operation of the Ceramic Resource Centre and the North Staffs Workforce Development Fund. The day to day running of the Unions legal operation and most recently our new membership and recruitment campaign. (send me an email) John Lally - Education Officer I have been a Full Time Officer with the Union since 1995 and also a member of the Union's National Executive Council. During this period many changes have taken place within Companies and having to be involved in members losing their jobs through factory closures and dealing with areas of Employment Law and pay terms and conditions for members of the Union. (send me an email) Jean Johnson - Women's Rights Officer I have been in office for over 17 years and during that time I have had responsibility for most areas of the industry. An enormous amount of change has taken place during this time, and we have had to adapt to the changes as they have occurred. Day to day business takes in all aspects of employment, but my particular interest is women’s issues, these include Maternity Rights and Sexual Harassment. There are of course issues that involve both genders such as bullying and harassment. Help and advice for all of these is available from Unity. (send me an email) Mick Young - Health and Safety Officer Hi, my name is Mick Young and I have worked within the Ceramics Industry for over thirty two years, for the past thirteen years I have been a national Organiser with Unity with responsibility for Health and safety. During my time as an officer with Unity I have represented members in every section of the ceramics industry and more recently an increasing numbers of members outside ceramics. I have assisted these members by helping and advising on issues ranging from pay to pensions. As I mentioned previously my specific responsibility within Unity is Health and Safety and because of the high priority that Unity places on the health and safety of its members, Unity has become one of the foremost unions in raising awareness of its members and their employers in the dangers to health that may be encountered both inside and outside the workplace. (send me an email) Harry Hockaday - Benefits Officer As well as the day to day employment issues, I have responsibility as the Benefits Officer, offering help and assistance to members concerning a range of various benefits. From 1st October it is no longer lawful to discriminate on the grounds of age. These regulations have been introduced to provide equality in age related employment the same way we have already for : sex, race, disability etc. The new laws ensure that people are no longer denied jobs or harassed because of their age, and in most cases, workers of all ages will have an equal chance of training and promotion. What do the regulations mean ? The new laws give individuals new rights, they extend existing rights and remove traditional barriers. They apply to all employers ; private and public sector, vocational training providers, trade unions, professional organisations, employer organisations, trustees and managers of occupational pension schemes. They cover employees of any age They cover recruitment, terms and conditions, promotions, transfers, dismissals, and training. They do not cover provision of goods and service. The new regulations will stop unjustified age discrimination in employment and work related training. Employers must make sure that any redundancy policies don't directly discriminate against older workers. They must not discriminate indirectly - for example, by selecting part time workers for redundancy, when a large number of these may be older workers. The only exceptions are where an age requirement can be objectively justified. Harassment and victimisation are also covered. The rights of employees facing retirement. Your employer can only retire you below 65 where they can show that having a lower retirement age is appropriate and necessary. Whatever age you are, your employer must inform you in writing, at least six months in advance, of your intended retirement date. You now have a statutory right to request to work beyond compulsory retirement which your employer must consider. Older people experience most age discrimination, however, it also takes place against young people. It is now unlawful for an employer to impose a lower age limit when recruiting, unless this age restriction can be objectively justified or is imposed by law. The upper and lower age limits for the entitlement of statutory redundancy pay have been removed. Your employer will have to pay you the statutory redundancy payment even if you are under 18 or over 65 (or after your normal retirement age if this is lower). This means that if you meet all the other requirements, you will receive redundancy pay whatever your age. The upper age limit on unfair dismissal claims is also removed. Society is changing and the working population is getting older. Better health standards mean that some people are choosing to work longer. Treating staff fairly and equally is the right thing to do. If you think you are suffering age discrimination - please contact Unity, where your officer will give you help and guidance to resolve your problem. Contact details are at the top right of this page.",7);arrFiles[13]=new Array(14,"news_hse.html","2006-11-03","Latest News","_your,keywords,goes,here_","_your description goes here_","Menu: Welcome About the Union Join Unity Benefits of Joining Meet the Officers Advice & Information Unity Newsletter Latest news: Age Discrimination Click Here Maternity Issues Click Here Health & Safety Exec Click Here Contact Us : Unity Hillcrest House Garth Street Hanley Stoke on Trent Staffordshire ST1 2AB Telephone : 01782 272755 - Email Us - Location Map - Search Unity Latest News and Issues : Health and Safety Executive - The case for more funding. HSE is one of the most highly regarded bodies amongst employers, employees, and members of the public. It is internationally respected for its expertise It produces advice and guidance, quality research and a first class forensic capability. They have experts in engineering, nuclear safety, occupational health etc - But many of these specialist skills are facing severe shortage as HSE is unable to recruit at market levels and can no longer afford to maintain its expertise. HSE's budget has been cut considerably since 2002. The 2004 spending review settlement has meant that huge cuts are having to be made to stay within budget. The latest cuts announced in August mean a further 250-350 posts will be lost by 2008. Using very conservative estimates, eleven times as many people are killed at work, or by their work than through acts of homicide. Around 85% of major injuries reported to HSE are never investigated (and there are known to be a large number that never get reported). There is only so much that the inspectors in HSE's Field Operation Directorate (FOD) can achieve. This means that very serious career-ending accidents go unpunished simply because there is no one to gather the evidence. There is much in the press about how we as a society, are risk averse. That health and safety stifles innovation. We are actually very risk tolerant. This tolerance accepts every year 340 FATAL workplace injuries. Between 10 and 20,000 deaths from occupational diseases. 1000 deaths on the road of people at work. 39,000 MAJOR injuries and 200,000 other injuries keeping people off work for more than 3 days. HSE has a massive job to do, yet receives about as much public funding as the Avon and Somerset Police Authority. The argument being that the HSE as no monopoly over saving lives and expenditure has to be balanced between departments who also have a claim. The difference though, is that lives are being lost through injuries and ill health inflicted on employees due to unpunished criminal acts. Figures for inspector numbers can be misleading. The official line is that there were 1,500 in 2005. Many of these however do no inspection, being in policy or management roles - the true number of front line inspectors is 900. There are more traffic wardens in London than there are inspectors in the whole of HSE's Field Operation Directorate. With so few staff the HSE's chance of properly regulating the 2012 Olympic development seems remote or only achievable by taking its eye of the ball elsewhere. With world attention focused on Britain it is vital that we project the right image. New money must be found to provide adequate regulations to stop these games being built on the suffering of those building and delivering them. The Olympics cannot be worth a single life. Unity is supporting the HSE's campaign for more resources ; please add your voice by sending the following letter to your MP. Click to Download Letter - Microsoft Word Format The full briefing is available on the TUC website Please note - Text of the above letter is : Dear ___________________________ Ref: Cuts to the Health and Safety Executive's Budget. Changes to the rules affecting working during pregnancy, maternity leave, maternity pay, and return to work - where babies are due on or after 1st April 2007 : Changes to the maternity and adoption rules mean that more workers will be entitled to take additional leave. But while the regulations become law on 1st October, they only apply to children born or adopted on or after 1st April 2007. The most significant of the regulations will be : The removal of the length of service condition for women to qualify for ADDITIONAL MATERNITY LEAVE. At present all female employees have the legal right to 26 weeks ordinary maternity leave. Employees who have been with their current employer for at least six months can have a further 26 weeks (unpaid). ALL employees whose babies are born on or after 1st April 2007 will now qualify for a years maternity leave. Statutory Maternity Pay. The work and families act will also extend the period of Statutory Maternity Pay from the current 26 weeks to 39 weeks from the 1st April 2007, meaning that those who qualify for SMP will receive it for 9 of the 12 months leave that they are entitled to. Parents who adopt a child after 1st April will benefit from similar changes to the Statutory Adoption Pay. 'Keeping In Touch' Days. Keeping In Touch' days will be introduced. These will allow employees to work for up to 10 days during the maternity/adoption leave (without extending the leave).
